The Haltermate is Black Dog Wear's new* figure 8 head halter. *new in sep 2016
It is our Second Generation figure 8 halter - we re-designed the Infin8 and it evolved into the Haltermate.
It is easier to fit and adjust, yet keeps all the great features which made the original comfortable and effective.
It sits securely and will not ride up into your dog's eyes, the lead attaches at the back and dogs respond quickly and easily to lead pressure.
But the Haltermate is even better - it can be left on your dog without a lead attached, it is simple to adjust and sits centered on the dog's neck. We've retained all the great features of the Infin8, without any of the hard bits.
The Haltermate is essentially a Flat Collar with the addition of a correction loop used for the Noseband attachment. Your lead is clipped at the back of the dog's neck, so it feels just like a normal collar and the noseband only tightens when the dog pulls.
This gives a very clear On/Off signal, so your dog will respond quickly and learn quickly, even to light pressure on the lead. And no matter how the lead is used, the noseband will not ride up into the dog's eyes.
The Haltermate is extremely effective in calming a pulling, boisterous dog, without the need for harsh corrections or gruff training techniques.
Fitting is easy - clip the collar on, hold the correction loop at the back of the neck, then wrap the noseband 1.. 2.. 3...
When you first get your Haltermate, take a little time to read the instructions and to understand the full possibilities of this halter.

Measuring your dog for an Haltermate
You could guess the size, but it would be like buying an expensive outfit without trying it on, so here is info on how to get the best fit for your dog.
Dogs' muzzle sizes vary, even within the same breed type, so guessing by breed isn't as good as Measuring your actual dog - either a Collar measurement or the Figure 8 Measurement.
Use a soft tape measure to get your dog's unique Collar size, or Figure 8 Muzzle then check the size charts below to see which size is best for your dog.
Sizing chart below shows the sizing from the collar measurement (YELLOW) of your dogs neck and also the figure 8 measurement (BLUE) if you want to check this too.

Figure 8 Measurement: Place a soft Tape Measure at the back of your dog's neck, then wrap it under the dog's jaw and around the muzzle, then back around the neck to form the figure8, as shown above.
Pull to a snug fit and write down this measurement - This is your dog's Figure 8 Measurement - check it on the size chart above.
Important: IF your dog is still growing - then you might select the larger size to allow for future growth.
As you can see in the chart above - if you are moving between halters and you had the Training Halter Medium then you would most likely go into a Size 3 Haltermate.

By: Kathryn Willis on 22 April 2024We just recently purchased the new size 5 Haltermate for our 12month old male St Bernard and it is absolutely brilliant. It is gentle on him but at the same time totally effective at giving us control. It is so hard to find great products for giant size dogs and we are so excited that Black Dog is now stocking the size 5 in the Haltermate. We have been using Black Dog collars and Leads for years and they are simply the best. We definitely recommend the Black Dog products as the best on the market.

Instantly reformed dog
By: Marion Darlington on 11 June 2023Unbelievably effective. Instant recall of all his walking instructions. He is a young hyperactive koolie with a bit of dingo. So smart, but reacts to the moment. With his new haltermate he is a different dog when out for a walk.

This halter is a godsend

I’ve referred a couple of others to use these and they’ve been similarly impressed. I’d definitely recommend.

Walking is now a breeze!
By: Pete on 25 November 2021We’ve tried a number of different lead and harness combinations to calm our red cattle down on a walk so I was skeptical when recommended another purchase at the local dog group. The change though was instantaneous, walking is now a breeze. Personally I was always confident but my wife was unable to feel comfortable walking Dwayne as he constantly pulls. No more with our haltermate. Best purchase since we’ve had him so definitely recommend.
